Passivhaus Design: Breezeway

Posted On: Posted In: News

The Williamsburg Passivhaus (PH) is two PH buildings linked by a breezeway.  The home will include a wood stove in the breezeway between the two structures, making it a three season space.  PH design eliminates leaky walls and windows – the typical sources of the oxygen most wood stoves need to operate.  Architects Lynn Posner Rice and Mary Yun, who are the architects for this beautiful home, designed the expansive timber truss room between the studio and the main house.   Although it is not airtight, the slab foundation is already insulated and the roof will be too.  A folding glass door wall system, which converts from a solid wall in winter to open screened space in summer, connects the two buildings and makes for a very user-friendly “outdoor” living space. The breezeway will also provide tempered air, sheltered from the outdoor temperature in the winter, for entry to the front door and studio door.
